The Sixth Annual Scira Viking Festival – Sheringham
Prepare for the Invasion!
Saturday February 16th sees the start of a week’s celebration of our Viking history with a host of exciting new features this year.
From the 16th – 22nd, Viking themed family activities will be taking place at Sheringham Museum at The Mo, right on the seafront. Children (and adults if they wish) will be able to take part in numerous events such as designing and painting a Viking shield, making a Viking axe, printing their own design onto a T-Shirt or tote-bag, making and decorating a Viking amulet and many other activities all under the guidance of our professional artists and craftsmen. Or maybe just draw your own design to be made into a unique badge.
Throughout the museum will be a Viking trail plus demonstrations of spinning wool from the Icelandic musk ox. Learn the meanings of the runes and maybe gain some insights into what lies ahead of you.
Then, on the finale day, Saturday 23rd February, get ready for the invasion of the Vikings! Visit the Viking village on The Leas and see what life may have been like in Sheringham a thousand years ago. Watch demonstrations and battles both in the village and on the beach. See a working Viking forge and weaving loom.
Then as the day draws to a close, prepare for the spectacle of the torchlight parade of the Vikings through the town. Fire-performers from Unhinged Circus will keep you entertained as they breathe fire into the darkening skies ready for the arrival of the 28 foot longboat which will then be ceremonially burned on the beach.
All details are in the leaflet which can be downloaded here or will be available from the Tourist Information centre and all our sponsors shops in the town.
Because of tides and weather, timings cannot be precise so be sure to like and follow our Facebook page Sheringham Carnival (official) to be kept up to date with any developments and enjoy the spectacle that is SCIRA!
